James Paruk is one of the world’s leading experts on the Common Loon. He has studied breeding and wintering loons across North America for the past 30 years. He recently published a new book on loons that summarizes our state of knowledge about these iconic birds (Loon Lessons: Uncommon Encounters with The Great Northern Diver). Paruk is a professor of biology at St. Joseph’s College in Standish, Maine, where he teaches ornithology and animal behavior.
